Marguerite Duras was a creature of many forms—novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and filmmaker—who moved through the French cultural landscape with a singular, restless energy. Over a career that spanned more than forty novels and ten films, she produced masterworks such as Hiroshima mon amour (1959) and The lover (1984), yet her true subject remained constant: the volatile intersection of love and desire.

Her life was defined by an avant-garde sensibility that refused the comforts of convention. In her work, as in her reality, characters pursue affection with a ferocity that borders on the delirious. "If I were not a writer," she once remarked in an interview, "I would be a prostitute."
