ルシンダ・コブリー個展「リニューアル」ステートメント
＜ルーン＞
古代の文字体系であるルーンは、約千年前に北ヨーロッパの文化圏で使われていたアルファベットに由来する文字です。単に言葉や音を表すだけでなく、概念を伝えることもあります。石や木に刻まれたルーン文字は、しばしば神秘的で魔術的であり、時には解読困難なものでもありました。その中に潜むメッセージや詩は謎めいており、現代でも完全に解き明かすことは難しいままです。
ルシンダ・コブリーの絵画を見つめると、私たちは彼女が探求し続ける美学の原理――遠近法、色彩、光、反射、そして筆致――への瞬間的な洞察を得ることができます。それは同時に、古代のルーンに見られるものと呼応しています。
西洋美術史において、フランスの脱構築理論では「ミザン・アビーム（mise en abyme）」という手法が言及されます。これは、あるイメージの複製をその中に配置することで無限に繰り返されるような効果を生み出す技法です。映画理論や文学理論では「物語の中の物語」という手法を指すこともあります。
このルーン文字のアルファベットにおいて、アーティストはその隠された物語を解き明かし、新たな意味を想像し、抽象絵画の中に潜む要素に呼応する独自の色彩パレットへと変換します。その色彩パレットと解釈されたルーンの意味は、彼女の作品を鑑賞する際に新たな視点をもたらします。
コブリーの作品に描かれた筆致の中に、私たちは謎めいた過去の残響を見出し、そこから未来に待ち受けるかもしれない可能性のかすかな輝きを垣間見ることができるのです。

Lucinda Cobley Exhibition Statement for “RENEWAL”
< Runes >
An ancient script, each rune is a letter derived from alphabets used in Northern European cultures about a thousand years ago. In addition to representing words and sounds, they may also convey concepts. The runes, marked from inscriptions carved into stone and wood, were often mysterious, magical and, at times, even difficult to interpret. The messages and poems lurking within them remain enigmatic and often elude translation.
Gazing into her paintings, Lucinda Cobley allows us momentary insights into her continuing investigation of the learned aesthetic principles of perspective, colour, light, reflection and gesture which simultaneously mirror those we find in the ancient runes.
In Western art history, as denoted in French Deconstruction theory, the term mis en abyme, the technique of placing a copy of an image within itself, often in a way that suggests an infinitely recurring sequence. In film theory and in literary theory, it refers to the story within the story technique.
In this runic alphabet, the artist unlocks their secretive stories while she reimagines their meanings and then translates them into a personal palette of colors that correspond to hidden elements within her abstract paintings. The palette of colors and interpreted rune meanings offer a fresh perspective when viewing her work.
Hidden within the painted gestures we discover in Ms. Cobley’s work lie the echoes of a mysterious past leading us toward a glimmer of the possibilities that may await us.

ルシンダ・コブリー / バイオグラフィー
1963年にイギリス・バーミンガムで生まれる。1985年にノーススタッフォードシャー工科大学でガラスデザインの学士号（優等学位）を取得。1993年にはロンドン芸術大学セントラル・セント・マーチンズでイラストレーションの大学院卒業ディプロマを取得。1998年にはロンドン大学教育研究所で教員資格を取得。
25年前に夫とともにテキサス州ヒューストンに移住。現在はモントローズ地区にあるスタジオ兼住居で活動。制作活動はドローイング、絵画、版画、彫刻的インスタレーションを含む。使用する絵画技法には、ミネラル顔料をアクリル、カゼイン、水彩のメディウムと組み合わせる方法などがあり、これらは、エッチング加工されたガラスやプラスチックの半透明な層から紙や木材に至るまで、選ばれた素材に応じて直接用いられる。
2009年にはテリー・サルタン氏による選考で「New American Painting」に掲載。2010年には、ニューヨークのイスリップ美術館でカレン・ショー氏がキュレーションを担当した「See Through」という展覧会で、ガラス絵画のインスタレーションが選出される。他の美術館での展示には、2011年にヒューストン美術館で開催された「Synthetic Supports: Plastic is the New Paper」や、ノースダコタ州ファーゴのプレインズ美術館でレベッカ・ダンハム氏がキュレーションを担当した「Bakken Boom」における2つの彫刻的インスタレーションが含まれる。作品は、2014年にフレスコ出版から刊行されたマイケル・パグリア氏とジム・エドワーズ氏による「Texas Abstract – Modern and Contemporary」でも紹介される。2020年には、テキサス美術を祝うヒューストン・アシスタンス・リーグの展覧会で、ニューヨーク近代美術館の絵画＆彫刻部門准キュレーターであるカーラ・メインズ氏によって「47 Agシリーズ」の絵画が選出され、ヒューストンのKBRビルで展示。また、ヒューストン美術館は、2010年の「Revision: White Series」の絵画1点と「Intervals Series」のモノプリント1点を2021年に収蔵。直近の個展は、2017年、2019年、2025年に東京の Gallery Gotoで開催。
2023年には、ヒューストンのウェンディ・ワグナー財団から助成金を受ける。現在、PrintMatters Houstonのメンバーであり、ヒューストンのアートリーグやバーニング・ボーンズ・プレスで絵画、ドローイング、版画を教えている。

Lucinda Cobley - BIO
Lucinda Cobley was born in Birmingham U.K. in 1963. In 1985 she graduated with a BA (Hons) Glass Design from North Staffordshire Polytechnic, a Post Graduate Diploma in Illustration from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of Arts, London in 1993, and qualified as a teacher from the Institute of Education at the University of Central London in 1998.
Lucinda Cobley lives in Houston, Texas, she moved there with her husband over 25 years ago and has a studio/residence in Montrose. Her practice encompasses drawing, painting, printmaking and sculptural installation. The painting techniques she uses include mineral pigments combined with acrylic, casein and watercolor mediums in direct response to selected materials ranging from translucent layers of etched glass and plastic to paper and wood.
She was included in New American Painting by juror Terrie Sultan in 2009. In 2010 an installation of her glass paintings was selected by curator Karen Shaw for an exhibition entitled See Through at the Islip Art Museum in New York. Other museum exhibitions include Synthetic Supports: Plastic is the New Paper at The Museum Fine Arts Houston in 2011. Two sculptural installations were included in Bakken Boom at Plains Art Museum, Fargo, North Dakota by curator Rebecca Dunham. Her work was featured in Texas Abstract – Modern and Contemporary by Michael Paglia and Jim Edwards published by Fresco Publishing in 2014. In 2020, in the Assistance League, Houston Celebrates Texas Art Exhibition, a painting from the 47 Ag series was selected by Cara Manes, Associate Curator of Painting & Sculpture, The Museum of Modern Art, NY, and exhibited at the KBR Building, Houston, TX. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston acquired a painting from the Revision: White Series, 2010 and a monoprint from the Intervals Series in 2021. Most recent solo exhibitions are at Goto Gallery, Tokyo, Japan in 2017, 2019 and 2025.
In 2023, she was awarded a grant from The Wendy Wagner Foundation in Houston TX. Currently a member of PrintMatters Houston, she teaches painting, drawing and printmaking privately and at Art League Houston and Burning Bones Press.
