Expert Talk: The Timeless Illustrations of Miroslav Šašek

Join us for a conversation with researcher and world-renowned illustration expert Professor Martin Salisbury. We will explore the endurance and continued appreciation of illustrator Miroslav Šašek, whose colourful portraits of cities worldwide—including Hong Kong—continue to be celebrated, printed, and sold decades after their initial publication.

About Panelists



Martin Salisbury

Professor of Illustration, Artist, Author, Illustrator
Martin Salisbury is Professor of Illustration at Cambridge School of Art in Anglia Ruskin University, where he developed the renowned MA Children’s Book Illustration programme. He worked as an illustrator for many years and is the author of a number of books on the practice and theory of illustration, for publishers Laurence King and Thames & Hudson. These have been published in many languages and countries around the world.

Michal Bačak

Illustrator
A keen observer and a humorous narrator. Thus, perhaps, we can briefly describe the creative approach of the illustrator Michal Bačák, whose drawings transform our world into a poetic poem full of light humor, traditional symbolism and intelligent creative excitement.
Bačák contributes to reputable magazines with his illustrations, or cooperates with leading Czech designers and brands. He also often applies his illustrations to the surface of used objects, including the porcelain or on the walls of architecture. He is a three-time recipient of the Elle Decor International Design Award and has twice been named Illustrator of the Year at the Czech Grand Design Awards.
Michal Bačák is fascinated by bats, Leoš Janáček and beer.

Laura Mannering

Executive Director, Hong Kong International Literary Festival
As Executive Director of the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, Laura Mannering advocates for literacy and language education. Holding a BA in Classical Literature and a PGDE in Early Childhood Education, she leverages her teaching background to champion the transformative power of storytelling and the importance of creating communities of readers.

If the warning is issued during normal opening hours, the Hub will remain open.

If the warning is issued before the Hub opens, the Hub will be closed until the warning is cancelled. If the warning is cancelled less than 2 hours before normal closing hours, the Hub will remain closed that day.
