About this Event
被乡邻唤作“石头仔”的少年,自年少便不甘世间不公,一颗济世火种深埋心底;
Vancouver Mandarin Drama Society Presents Its 10th Anniversary Epic Production
《Dr.SUN YAT-SEN》(天下为公)
November 20, 21 & 22
Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre, Vancouver
A young boy known simply as “Little Stone” grows up unable to accept the injustice he sees around him. Even as a child, he carries within him a quiet but unshakable dream—to make the world a better place.
As a young man, he travels overseas to practice medicine, healing the sick with compassion and skill. Yet amidst a nation in turmoil, he comes to a profound realization: while illness can be cured one patient at a time, a suffering country requires something far greater—a revolution that can change its destiny.
His long journey eventually brings him to Vancouver, where Chinese immigrants struggle to survive in a foreign land, enduring discrimination, hardship, and exclusion. Among them, members of the Chinese Freemasons (Hongmen) stand together with extraordinary courage. Though they possess little more than their determination and hard-earned savings, they dedicate themselves to supporting the movement to transform China. Their remarkable contributions became an unforgettable chapter in the history of British Columbia’s Chinese community.
From the passionate call for change to the birth of a republic; from enduring love and friendship to unwavering courage amid war and upheaval, The World for All follows decades of triumph, sacrifice, and hope. It tells the story not only of great historical figures, but also of ordinary people who gave everything for a cause greater than themselves—leaving behind their families, fortunes, and even their lives in pursuit of a brighter future.
As one life nears its final chapter, every hardship, every reunion, every act of courage, and every regret comes together in four enduring Chinese characters:
Performed in Mandarin with English surtitles, this original production uncovers a little-known chapter of Chinese Canadian history, bringing to the stage the true stories of overseas Chinese whose sacrifices reached across the Pacific to help shape modern China. Youthful idealism, the compassion of a physician, the brotherhood of the Hongmen, and the dream of a democratic republic intertwine in a sweeping historical drama filled with deeply human emotion.
Through cinematic staging, powerful performances, and breathtaking visual design, audiences are transported across a century of history. Every scene offers moments of inspiration, heartbreak, and hope.
You don’t need to open a history book to discover this extraordinary story. Experience it live on stage and witness the courage, resilience, and vision of the pioneers who crossed the ocean in search of a better future.
This is Vancouver’s story. This is a story that belongs to all of us. A powerful theatrical event that will stay with you long after the curtain falls—and one of the year’s must-see productions.
