Victoria Rose et Stone Filipczak proposent une art-folk caractérisée par un songwriting incisif et une production inventive à la frontière du baroque. Après leur premier album Mind Palace, l’EP Are You There God? It’s Me, @, et des concerts en première partie de Jessica Pratt et Cameron Winter, le groupe de Philadelphie revient donc avec un second album.
Auto-enregistré, produit et mixé par Victoria et Stone, Autosmile déploie la vision de @, faisant honneur à toute une lignée d’artistes iconoclastes, dont Fairport Conveniton, Neutral Milk Hotel et Animal Collective, en parvenant à créer une musique aussi intemporelle qu’avant-gardiste, aventureuse et pleine de sagesse.

Songwriters Victoria Rose and Stone Filipczak share a devotion to each other and to the music of @. Outside the band, Victoria works as a beekeeper and Stone as a self-taught programmer, but together they form a singular avant-garde songwriting force. Both long-time participants in the D.I.Y. music world, they met through the East Coast house-show circuit and gradually developed the @ formula: half Victoria songs, half Stone songs, each filling in the cracks of the other's compositions.
Their debut album, Mind Palace Music, found an unexpectedly wide audience despite the band's deliberately un-searchable name. At the time, @ had never played live or even sung together in person, collaborating entirely at a distance. In the years that followed, they evolved into a formidable live band, an experience that deeply shaped the making of Autosmile, their first album for 4AD. Arranged with live performance in mind, the record relies less on digital production and more on organic experimentation.
Although both members were finally living in Philadelphia during the making of Autosmile, they continued to work separately, recording at home with remarkably low-tech setups and the help of close friends contributing cello, violin and drums. Across eleven songs, Victoria and Stone balance beauty and pain, darkness and wonder, reimagining psychedelic folk through inventive songwriting, adventurous arrangements and a distinctly contemporary lens. Their collaboration once again leads to fascinating and timeless results.
