Ο Νίκος Τοπαλίδης παρουσιάζει τη νέα ενότητα έργων του στην ατομική έκθεση “edge along below”, στην γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη. Εκθέτει έργα από γραφίτη σε χαρτί.
Όπως γράφει στο κείμενό του ο Ιστορικός τέχνης και επιμελητής Χριστόφορος Μαρίνος: «Η δεύτερη ατομική έκθεση του Νίκου Τοπαλίδη στην γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη με τίτλο edge along below εστιάζει στην αρχαιολογική προσέγγιση της τοπιογραφίας και στην ανασκαφική διαδικασία της ζωγραφικής. Αν στην πρώτη του ατομική, το 2023, μας καλούσε σε έναν «περίπατο κατά μήκος της ακτής» (A walk along the shore), με τη νέα του έκθεση ο Τοπαλίδης μάς παροτρύνει να κινηθούμε προσεκτικά προς ένα αθέατο, άγνωστο και αχαρτογράφητο «από κάτω», που αποκαλύπτεται σταδιακά και πολύ αργά. Η αγγλική λέξη «along», που υπάρχει και στους δύο τίτλους, υποδηλώνει τη συνέχεια, τη συνεκτική σχέση ανάμεσα στις εκθέσεις του. Για την ακρίβεια, η τωρινή έκθεση αποτελεί το δεύτερο μέρος μιας τριλογίας. Την τελευταία δεκαετία, ο καλλιτέχνης επεξεργάζεται μια μεγάλη ενότητα έργων οργανωμένη σε τρία μέρη, με αρχή, μέση και κατάληξη, τα οποία δουλεύονται παράλληλα. Το πρώτο μέρος παρουσιάστηκε στην ατομική του 2023 με θέμα το τοπίο, το δεύτερο αφορά την αρχαιολογία μέσα σε αυτό το φανταστικό ή μνημονικό τοπίο και το τρίτο θα περιλαμβάνει τα ευρήματα της συγκεκριμένης ανασκαφής. Βρισκόμαστε λοιπόν στη μέση μιας εν εξελίξει ενότητας που εκτείνεται στον χρόνο και προσδιορίζεται τόσο από το παρελθόν όσο και από το μέλλον.
Η ενότητα που παρουσιάζει σήμερα ο Τοπαλίδης κινείται σε ένα μεταίχμιο, ανάμεσα στο τοπίο και στο εύρημα. Το θέμα των έργων συμπίπτει με τη διαδικασία της δημιουργίας τους. Και εδώ συναντάμε κάποια τοπία, συνδετικούς κρίκους με την προηγούμενη έκθεση· αλλάζει όμως η οπτική γωνία θέασης, άρα και η εμπειρία. Στα έργα του edge along below ο ορίζοντας απουσιάζει. Ακόμη και όταν μια ανάγλυφη οριζόντια γραμμή τον υπαινίσσεται, το βλέμμα είναι στραμμένο προς τη γη. Είναι το χαμηλωμένο βλέμμα του κρόνιου ανθρώπου «που σκάβει το έδαφος με τα μάτια», ένα βλέμμα που –για να θυμηθούμε τον Walter Benjamin– φέρει κάτι από τη στάση του μελαγχολικού: αντί να χάνεται στη μακρινή θέα, προσκολλάται σε ό,τι βρίσκεται κοντά στα πόδια του, στις πέτρες και στα θραύσματα. Το τοπίο αποκτά βάθος και η ενατένιση αντικαθίσταται από την κατοπτική θέαση, από μια κατακόρυφη κίνηση –μια καταβύθιση– προς το εσωτερικό του εδάφους.
[…] ‘Δουλεύοντας προς τα μπροστά, γυρνάω προς τα πίσω’, παρατηρεί ο Τοπαλίδης με κάποια έκπληξη, αφήνοντας έτσι να εννοηθεί ότι τόσο η παρούσα έκθεση όσο και ολόκληρη η τριλογία δεν είναι παρά μια εξελικτική πορεία προς το παρελθόν. Είναι κι αυτός ένας κυνηγός απολιθωμάτων, μόνο που τα δικά του ευρήματα βρίσκονται μέσα στην ύλη της ζωγραφικής».

Ο Νίκος Τοπαλίδης (γεν. 1985) είναι απόφοιτος της Ανωτάτης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών. Ζει κι εργάζεται στην Αθήνα. Το έργο του εστιάζει στην τοπιογραφία κι εκφράζεται μέσα από την αποσπασματική απεικόνιση ενός φανταστικού τοπίου που αποδίδεται με το ανάγλυφο και το πυκνά δουλεμένο σχέδιο με γραφίτη. Το 2023 παρουσίασε την πρώτη του ατομική έκθεση στην γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη με τίτλο "A walk along the shore". Το έργο του έχει παρουσιαστεί σε ομαδικές εκθέσεις, μεταξύ των οποίων: "Η κρυμμένη εικόνα" (Γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη, Αθήνα, 2026), "Υπογαία"(Αρχοντικό Χρυσανθόπουλου, Πύργος Κύμης, 2025), "Το τέλος του τοπίου" (Γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη, Αθήνα, 2024), "Encore- Νέα ελληνική ζωγραφική" (Πινακοθήκη του Δήμου Αθηναίων, 2023)", "À fleur d'image- Oeuver à travers la matière" (La Châtaigneraie, Flamalle, Belgium, 2023), "Thalassa - The sea in Greek art from antiquity until today", (Μουσείο της Σανγκάης, 2022), "The Rooms 2016" (Ξενοδοχείο St George Lycabettus, Αθήνα, 2016), "Kodra Fresh" (Στρατόπεδο Κόδρα, Θεσσαλονίκη, 2011) κ.ά. Τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2014 συμμετείχε, σε συνεργασία με την Βασιλική Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών της Αμβέρσας, στο σεμινάριο με τίτλο "Time and Tide" στο Εσκάλ της Γαλλίας. Έχει βραβευτεί από την ARTWORKS (2022) και είναι Fellow του Προγράμματος Υποστήριξης Καλλιτεχνών Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος (ΙΣΝ). Zoumboulakis Galleries presents “edge along below”, Nikos Topalidis’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition features a new body of works in graphite on paper.
Art historian and curator Christoforos Marinos writes in the accompanying exhibition text: “Nikos Topalidis’s edge along below at Zoumboulakis Galleries focuses on an archaeological approach to the landscape and on the excavatory process of painting itself. Whilst in his first solo exhibition, in 2023, he invited us on a ‘walk along the shore’ in his new exhibition Topalidis urges us to move cautiously towards an unseen, unknown and uncharted ‘below’, which is revealed gradually and very slowly. The English word “along,” present in both titles, suggests continuity and the cohesive relationship between the two exhibitions. More precisely, the current exhibition constitutes the second part of a trilogy. Over the past decade, the artist has been developing an extensive body of work organised into three parts, beginning, middle and end—which are worked on concurrently. The first part, centered on landscape, was presented in his 2023 solo exhibition; the second concerns archaeology within this imaginary or mnemonic landscape; and the third will encompass the findings of this particular excavation. We therefore find ourselves in the middle of an evolving body of work that unfolds over time and is defined as much by the past as by the future.
The body of work Topalidis presents in the current exhibition occupies an in-between space, somewhere between landscape and archaeological find. What the works explore is inseparable from the process through which they are made. Here, too, we encounter certain landscapes, connecting threads with the previous exhibition; yet the angle of vision has changed, and with it, the experience. In the works of edge along below, the horizon is absent. Even when a raised horizontal line seems to suggest it, the gaze is directed towards the ground. It is the lowered gaze of the Saturnine man, who ‘digs into the ground with his eyes’ —a gaze that, in Walter Benjamin’s terms, carries something of the melancholic’s bearing. bears something of the melancholic disposition: rather than losing itself in a distant view, it becomes fixed on what lies close to his feet, on stones and fragments. The landscape acquires depth, and contemplation is replaced by a view from above, by a vertical movement—a descent—into the interior of the ground”.
Short Biography:
Nikos Topalidis (b. 1985) is a graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts. He lives and works in Athens. His practice focuses on landscape, expressed through fragmented representations of imaginary landscapes rendered in relief and densely worked graphite drawings. In 2023, he presented his first solo exhibition at Zoumboulakis Gallery, entitled A Walk Along the Shore. His work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including: The Hidden Image (Zoumboulakis Gallery, Athens, 2026); Hypogaia (Chrysanthopoulos Mansion, Pyrgos, Kymi, 2025); The End of the Landscape (Zoumboulakis Gallery, Athens, 2024); Encore – New Greek Painting (Municipal Gallery of Athens, 2023); À fleur d’image – Œuvrer à travers la matière (La Châtaigneraie, Flémalle, Belgium, 2023); Thalassa – The Sea in Greek Art from Antiquity to the Present (Shanghai Museum, 2022); The Rooms 2016 (St George Lycabettus Hotel, Athens, 2016); and Kodra Fresh (Kodra Camp, Thessaloniki, 2011), among others. In September 2014, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, he participated in the seminar Time and Tide in Escalles, France.
