Sravana Borkataky-Varma will lead us on a collective journey into the energy of divine sexuality
In this day-long workshop, Sravana Borkataky-Varma will lead a collective journey into the mysteries of divine sexuality and gender. Is the divine masculine or feminine, or both, or neither? To explore these possibilities, we will engage in guided meditation practices that derive from the Kāmākhyā lineage of Śākta (goddess) tantra. Breakout group discussion will support us in peeling off the layers that prevent us from recognizing the divine within.
This workshop also begins with a gentle prerequisite. If you use the pronouns he/him, consider wearing something you consider feminine. For example, you might paint your nails, wear makeup or eyeliner, or don a piece of outer clothing you consider feminine. If you use the pronouns she/her, then wear something you consider masculine. You might experiment with aftershave or male deodorant, or wear a piece of outer clothing you consider masculine. If you consider yourself gender fluid, lean into the opposite of what you predominantly project as your social or gender identity.
Sravana Borkataky-Varma is a historian, educator, and social entrepreneur. As a historian, she studies Indian religions, focusing on esoteric rituals, gender, and bodies particularly in Hindu Śākta traditions (Goddess Tantra). In the past, she has taught at Harvard University, the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, the University of Montana, and Rice University.
