A grounded solstice morning of classical Hatha built for healthy aging — strength, balance, breath. Any age, any level.
About this Event

The longest day is also the first day the light begins to turn.

June 21 is the summer solstice — the longest day of the year. In the Vedic calendar it also marks Dakshinayana, the point where the sun begins its southward journey and the year, quietly, starts to age.

It's a fitting morning to ask an honest question. Not how do I stay young — but how do I grow older with strength, balance, and a clear mind?

This year's International Day of Yoga carries the global theme Yoga for Healthy Aging. At Yogshala, we're marking it with a practice built around exactly that.'

What this is-

Āyus — Sanskrit for lifespan, vitality — is a 1.5-hour solstice morning of classical Hatha Yoga designed around the things that actually keep a body capable for decades: balance, joint and spine mobility, breath capacity, and the simple, underrated skill of getting down to the floor and back up with control.

This isn't a workout to exhaust you, and it isn't a flexibility show. It's a practice you could still be doing at 75 — and the point is that you will be.

We'll move through:

  • A grounded foundational Hatha practice for mobility, balance, and strength
  • Pranayama (breath work) for the nervous system and lung capacity
  • A short, plain-spoken talk on what the research actually shows about yoga and aging — cognition, bone density, balance, mood — and what it doesn't
  • Stillness, rest, and tea together afterward

Who it's for

Any age. Any experience level. Complete beginners are genuinely welcome — nothing here requires flexibility or prior practice. If you're in your 30s, you're future-proofing. If you're in your 60s or beyond, this was built for you.

One honest note on the space: this is a floor-based practice in a studio that is not wheelchair accessible and is reached by 4-5 stairs. If you can comfortably get down to a mat and back up, you're set. We'd rather you know exactly what you're walking into so the morning works for you.
