For 2024, Oona has a new wave of underground music built specifically for the club ready for release. So far, a remix for Moon Boots featuring Mute Records artist Ora The Molecule called ‘Wrong Note’ and a collaboration with West Coast house music legend Doc Martin on Selador Records called ’Soul On Fire’ have been released with new EP being lined up for Watergate and Hallucienda for late spring and early summer.
As a young girl in upstate New York, Öona Dahl became fascinated and obsessed with music by listening to old cassette tapes in her living room. This passion evolved quickly and before long, she began making music sketches on Acid Pro and Fruity Loops. Wanting to experience electronic music on the dance floor, she made many excursions to Toronto’s rave scene. Inspired by the DJs around her, she bought a couple of turntables and set about learning how to mix records. Soon she was playing in clubs, raves and warehouses by the age of 17. These formative years crystallized Öona’s love for underground dance music.
Öona moved to Florida in the early 2000s to spend her college years studying sound design and digital media while immersing herself in the Florida underground scene. Between events in Orlando, Miami and Tampa, he became a prominent figure in the scene and eventually met DJ Monk (Rabbit In The Moon) and DJ Three of Hallucination Recordings, forming a close bond that continues to this day.
By 2012, Öona’s music was reaching the hands of different DJs and producers; and was making waves on dance floors, leading to the release of her Let The Light In EP on Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream label. Meanwhile, Öona was developing another side to her music; more experimental. Exploring early influences such as the ambient stylings of This Mortal Coil, the electronics of Björk and the soundscapes of Brian Eno. Öona’s efforts caught the attention of DJ Three and she signed an album deal with his label Hallucienda . In 2017, the EP Wait. Lifted acted as a musical sign post permeated by rhythms rooted in leftfield house and ambient pop. Her debut album Holograma was soon released, revealing a complete body of work from an artist who had now found her feet and her voice across the entire spectrum of electronic music.
From 2021 until now, the self-released Road to Awe EP on Bandcamp and the Godtripper EP on Watergate Records presented vibrant grooves with a subtle acid edge. Slumber, her collaboration with Amber Cox, deftly explored more futuristic and electronic sounds via XLR8R+ track ‘Fell Into A Dream’, the Twin Moon EP via modern Balearic house label Rumors and the highly acclaimed six-track Ghost Inside EP on Hallucienda. ‘Love Is All We Need’, her first collaboration with Kirsty Hawkshaw (the voice of iconic rave act Opus III), was released to critical acclaim and dancefloor cheers. The original version is a brilliant slice of electronica, while Oona’s remix slyly hints at the past as she looks toward the future. Kirsty’s signature vocals deliver the message, creating a mood that is as reflective as it is elevated.
This collaboration with Kirsty Hawkshaw continues on Oona’s second artist album Morph on Hallucienda with the stunning house track ‘Serenity’. Picking up where Holograma left off, Morph finds Oona delivering her most adventurous body of work to date, expanding her songwriting prowess from spectacular vocal electronics to indie dance offerings. All this while she continues to leave his indelible mark on house and avant-garde techno. Morph has received critical acclaim from 5 Magazine’s Terry Matthew, The Wire’s Joe Muggs, DJ Mag’s Bruce Tantum and a cover story in Mixmag Mexico among others.
