A captivating musical experience for the heart, mind and soul from one of Iceland’s greatest contemporary exports.
Icelandic music has always taken the world by storm – be it Sigur Rós, Ólafur Arnalds, or Björk – there’s an undeniable magic for a country with a population smaller than Tasmania to produce some of the most popular acts of all time. Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and collaborator Ásgeir Einarsson is ranked amongst them, with an estimated one tenth of the Icelandic population owning his award-winning 2012 album Dýrð í dauðaþögn – the highest selling album to ever hit the Icelandic charts.
The Music described Asgeir’s 2018 performance at the Centre as ‘a magical experience that captivates our senses in every way possible’. In June the beloved Icelandic musician returns to Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, where his serene and soulful sounds will soar once again.
The centrepiece of Asgeir’s 2023 tour is his fourth and intensely personal studio album Time On My Hands. This latest evolution in Ásgeir’s sound sees his folk roots fuse with evocative landscape-like textures and electronica influences for a lyrically-driven and intimate musical experience.
Time On My Hands sees Ásgeir in a state of self-reflection and experimentation, having spent much of the last few years in his home and in the studio deeply engrossed in writing, recording, translating and producing. On this album he’s entered new realms of composition, sensitively layering acoustics with electronics and brass. As with some of his previous work, most notably Afterglow and Bury The Moon, Ásgeir plays with euphoric and choral elements of electronic pop music while keeping a tight grasp on the introspective, vocal-leadstyle of the acoustica that made him famous.
Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is ‘the perfect venue for Einarsson to make use of the stillness in the air as the audience sits quietly without making a noise or holding up their smartphone to record a video’ writes The Music. Last time Asgeir received a standing ovation from adoring audience members. This is a live music experience that can’t be missed.
