Racing Heart is the musical heartchild of Mathias Hatleskog Tjønn. After forming in Brooklyn in 2010, the band has released two albums: To Walk Beside that Ghost (2012) and What Comes After (2016). Previous creative collaborators have included Anthony LaMarca (The War on Drugs, St. Vincent), Justin Keller (Sufjan Stevens), Jenny Hval, and Hanne Hukkelberg, who produced the second album. And now, the third album extra//ordinary is on the way!
extra//ordinary portrays nine relatively unknown, real, and "ordinary" people from around the world who have each done extraordinary things. It is not necessarily about great tragedies or tales of heroism, although there are elements of both in their histories. The point is to highlight fates most of us are unaware of and let the wild, touching, and occasionally inspiring lives they lived be the basis for each song. Some examples include the world's first drag queen, who was also a freed slave; a baggage handler who takes the controls of a plane on what would be his first and last flight in the cockpit; and a Japanese bank employee turned aspiring explorer, who wanted to hug a rare red panda cub in the jungles of South China, bring home a lost soldier in the Philippines missing since World War II, and find the abominable snowman in the Himalayas.
Contributing to the album are Adrian Myhr on bass, Andreas Winther (Selma French) and Audun Hjort (Fagernes Yacht Klubb, Utlandet) on drums, Sankung Jobarteh on kora, Espen Reinertsen on woodwinds, Nina Mortvedt (Band of Gold, Susanne Sundfør), Laura Loriga and Halvor Falck Johansen (Louien, Silver Lining) on vocals. In terms of genre, instrumentation, and sound, the album is as wide-reaching as the cast of characters, but is grounded in a kind of eccentric pop-rock with world music aspirations.
