About this Event
ArtYard and the Frenchtown Bookshop are excited to announce that Zoë Keating, an Emmy-nominated cellist whose modern compositions use live looping to create an “orchestra” of harmonic parts, will be appearing at ArtYard at 8 PM on Friday, March 15, 2024. Keating takes the stage with only a cello and a foot-controlled laptop. She uses them to create lush, gorgeous, and “absolutely entrancing” (Boing Boing) orchestrations of layered sound. Each performance is unique — Keating begins with a composition and then spontaneously improvises over it. She then explains how each piece was constructed and the stories behind it. Keating is “a poster child for the independent woman artist” (NPR, All Things Considered). For 20 years, she has used her own studio to compose, produce, and independently release her albums, foregoing record companies and their misleading marketing labels. She urges musicians to “get out of your musical ghetto.” Instead, her music freely blends the urgency of rock, the lyricism of jazz, and the delicacy of chamber music. Keating’s DIY-produced albums have reached No. 1 on the iTunes classical charts and appeared on the Billboard classical charts. Her music is heard as the theme music to NPR’s “On Being,” the bumper music for NPR’s “Morning Edition,” and on CBS and HBO. Her score for the film “Oslo” earned an Emmy nomination (with her co-composer Jeff Russo). She has also composed the scores for the American Repertory Ballet, Apex Dance Company, and many other dance groups. Keating is also a committed collaborator. She has played with Imogen Heap, Thomas Dolby, Sean Ono Lennon, Tears for Fears, the cello-forward rock band Rasputina, and dozens more musicians. ArtYard is thrilled to present this happily unsigned and independent avant-garde cellist. What they're saying "...a distinctive mix of old and new -- layers of sound, that feel more like orchestrations than a solo instrument. " - National Public Radio "Swoon-inducing. Like taking a triple-shot of Absinthe before stepping outside of the bar just in time to see the sun exploding." -SF Weekly "... uses live looping to transform solo performances into multipart masterpieces." - Electronic Musician "...sublime minimalist music with a pop sensibility" - San Francisco Weekly Photo and Video Consent By registering for this event, you are giving ArtYard permission to use photos and video on our website and social media.
