Take a deep dive into zine-making with this one-day intensive workshop. Queer zinesters of all skill levels welcome!!
About this Event

This one-day intensive workshop will provide comprehensive instruction on how to make a zine. Whether you are an experienced zinester, or you are opening another tab right now to search "what is a zine," you will walk away from this workshop with new skills. We will cover the basics of putting together a zine, discuss different methods and approaches, and provide instruction for distributing your zines. Attendees will connect to the larger zine community, and find out about zine happenings around the Bay Area. Mostly, we will make zines!

Over the course of five hours, attendees will have the space, materials, and guidance needed to walk away with 1-2 finished zines. This event will skew toward a fast-paced surrealist approach that utilizes collage methodologies, but all zine-making practices are welcome. Several experienced zinesters representing a variety of styles and techniques will be available to ensure ample hands-on instruction.

If you're in need of a little push to get out of your head and just make stuff, this is the event for you. If you've been sitting on an idea for a zine for months or years, this is the event for you. If you're looking to make friends and form community with other queer zinesters, this is the event for you!

What's included with your ticket:

You will have access to a wealth of materials and supplies, as well as hands-on support from workshop facilitators. Additionally, snacks and beverages will be provided to keep you nourished during the workshop. Full meals will not be provided, so please plan accordingly.

Pricing:

Tickets to this event are provided on a sliding scale. Please choose the tier that best aligns with your personal financial situation:

  • Low Income ($25-75): This tier is for folks making little to no income. If you're struggling to make ends meet and have very little expendable income, this tier is for you. If this tier still presents a financial barrier to attending the event, please reach out to us at [email protected].
  • Standard ($100-175): This tier is our suggested fee in order to cover the basic costs of running this event. If you are financially stable and not struggling to meet your basic needs, this tier is for you.
  • Supporter ($200-250): This tier supports us offering low-cost and free tickets to attendees for whom cost would be a barrier to attending. Please consider supporting us at this tier if you are financially comfortable and have expendable income. Thank you!!

The price of your ticket helps us to cover basic costs, including venue rental, materials and supplies, refreshments, and stipends for our workshop facilitators and event coordinators. This event is run on very thin margins, however any profit we do make from this event goes directly to future events in order to support our efforts to create community spaces and events for queer artists in the Bay Area.

About the event organizers:

This event is organized by The Spooky Haus, a collective of transgender and gender-nonconforming artists. We are dedicated to working toward self-realization and expression through collaborative art. As a community, we promote a sense of acceptance and social safety, providing a space that encourages exploration and experimentation of all kinds. This event is organized by collective members Lior, Miriam and Nathaniel.

Accessibility:

We are very excited to be able to host Zine Jam at Firehouse Projects, a totally rad new event space in Oakland located three blocks away from Lake Merritt BART. There are no stairs into the building and a short ramp into the courtyards. There is an accessible bathroom on premises.
Attendees will be required to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination and do a rapid test before entering the space. We will be providing rapid tests for all attendees at the beginning of the event, please either take a rapid test the night before and bring it or take one in the courtyard before entering the space. The space is large and well-ventilated and masking will be optional at the event after a rapid test is taken.
We are dedicated to making this event accessible for all attendees. Please don’t hold back and let us know if you have any accessibility concerns so we can solve it together.
