meditative/convulsive freeform improvisation
About this Event

Zeropunkt return to Arthur's for the first time since their rapturous sell-out Alice Coltrane Tribute in 2023. This time round they will be exclusively playing the unique brand of meditative/convulsive freeform improvisation for which they have become known. The lineup on the night will consist of Fregus Cullen on saxes, keys, guitar, and possibly some vocals and piano (you never know!), Jamie Davis on drums, Damien Lennon on bass, and Hugh O' Neill on trumpet and electronics.

Zeropunkt began as a quartet called ¡NO! in 2013, originally including Roller Sparkers man Graham Montgomery. Graham left the group in 2016 and the remaining members re-grouped as a trio called Zeropunkt. Over the many years, individually and collectively, they have collaborated live with an array of underground pioneers including but not limited to: Glenn Branca, Damo Suzuki, Kawabata Makoto, Itaru Oki, Alfred Harth, and many others. Since 2015, under either moniker, they have released 15 albums across all formats. The most recent is 2022's ZPEP, and it appears on cassette courtesy of Last Of Our Kind. Zeropunkt have no songs, no genre. Their music has been described as para-generic, neo-psychedelic, experimental and even neanderthal. But it's truer to say they play a sort of country music, albeit from a country that doesn't exist, where nature's colours are flexible, and thoughts and minds are elastic.

Press for previous Zeropunkt/¡NO! releases and/or live performances:"The most enigmatic and uncompromising trio on the free Irish scene."(Cormac Larkin, The Irish Times)
"Mystical horror, soundtrack aping, free jazz and no wave fumbling, such experiments in letting go and embracing one’s inner demon seem always to yield intensely psychedelic results"(Tristan Bath, The Quietus)

"A boss outing with a Neanderthal edge"(Byron Coley, The Wire)

"Reviewing Miles Davis' In A Silent Way ... Lester Bangs opined: 'It is part of a transcendental new music which flushes categories away ... defined mainly by its deep emotion and unaffected originality'—a summation that could serve just as well for Sediments, an impressive creation from [these] improv warriors ... that may yet prove to be just as timeless."(Ian Patterson, All About Jazz ☆☆☆☆ )
