Zabrecky on Houdini and the Spirits: An Illustrated Talk by Rob Zabrecky with Live Music by Hasco Enjoyments
As we mark the 100th anniversary of Harry Houdini’s passing, join us in celebrating the life, legacy, and enduring mysteries surrounding the world’s most famous escape artist. And what better way than to step into the shadowy crossroads where belief and skepticism collided as Rob Zabrecky — Magic Castle mainstay, theatrical medium, and two-time Academy of Magical Arts Lecturer of the Year — explores one of the 20th century’s most captivating cultural battles: Harry Houdini vs. the spirits.
Before Zabrecky's presentation, we will meet in the courtyard to experience the sounds of Hasco Enjoyments, the quietly surreal project of John-Peter Hasson. Performance begins at 6:30PM.
In this richly illustrated presentation, Zabrecky traces Houdini’s campaign against fraudulent mediums during America’s Spiritualist craze, when séances filled parlors from New York to Los Angeles. A master illusionist himself, Houdini recognized the mechanics behind spirit cabinets, slate writing, trumpet manifestations, and ectoplasmic materializations—and set out to expose them. Yet his story is far more complicated than simple debunking.
Drawing on years of performing in the Houdini Séance Room at Hollywood’s Magic Castle, Zabrecky examines Houdini’s devotion to his late mother, his early openness to psychic phenomena, and his eventual disillusionment. At the center stands his notorious clash with celebrated Boston medium Mina “Margery” Crandon, whose séances ignited investigations, headlines, and controversy.
Through archival images, historical accounts, and live demonstrations of classic séance deceptions, Zabrecky recreates a world suspended between grief and wonder. Was Houdini exposing trickery—or protecting the vulnerable from exploitation? Did he secretly hope to be proven wrong?
Joining him for part of the presentation is Marcie Hume, who will spotlight some of the era’s most famous and infamous mediums. Hume has collaborated with Zabrecky on séances and Spook Shows, including secret midnight séances at New Orleans’ Overlook Film Festival, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Magical Arts.
The evening also features courtyard music by Hasco Enjoyments, the quietly surreal project of John-Peter Hasson. Blending baritone guitar, flute, synthesizers, and saxophone, the ensemble creates music that feels half-remembered and dreamlike—strange, warm, and inviting. Their debut album, Wow!, features contributions from Nick Reinhart, David Pajo, Bar McKinnon, and Brian Wecht.
A summer evening of spirits, mystery, music, and illusion.
