About this Event
The Jersey Bee, a non profit community news organization, is hosting a free youth media workshop at Rutgers-Newark from August 12-16, designed for students who are interested in journalism, news reporting, writing, media production, social issues, or community engagement.
During this in-person workshop, participants will help create a “Student’s Guide to School Board Elections” for Newark students who will be eligible to vote in school board elections starting next year.Participants will work with local journalists at The Jersey Bee and other area news organizations about how to identify relevant community issues and produce media that addresses community information needs.
You'll learn:
- The importance of community media.
- How to conduct research.
- How to interview.
- How to collaborate with other media makers.
In addition, participants will tour Rutgers-Newark to learn about student life on campus and visit the NJ Spotlight News studios in Newark to learn about the television station and digital news outlet.
All students who complete the workshop will receive an author credit in the “Student’s Guide to School Board Elections”, which will be published by The Jersey Bee and other media outlets.
Students entering grades 11 and 12, who will be between 16-19 years old by Aug 10th are eligible to apply.
