Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

Mental Health First Aid training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial assistance and support to an individual who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Mental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use challenges by improving understanding and providing an action plan to safely identify and respond to a potential mental illness or substance use challenge.

Y-MHFA participants will learn about the role of a Mental Health First Aider, Common Mental Disorders in the Unites States, Signs and Symptoms, MHFA Action Plan, and Self-Care.

AFTER THE COURSE, YOU’LL BE ABLE TO:

• Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).
• Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
• How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis.
• How to connect the youth with help.
• Expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying.

Training Expectations:

This class takes place in-person at Kentwood Public Schools Administration Building (5820 Eastern Avenue SE, Kentwood, MI 49508) . Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early. If you join more than 10 minutes after the training start time, you will not receive credit for the course.

There is a 1 hour lunch break. We do not offer lunch with this training. You are welcome to bring your own (we do have a microwave), and there are a plethora of restaurants and fast casual places to grab lunch.

Due to the nature of the content, this training is for ages 18 and older.

This training is conducted by a Hope Network employee who is also a certified USA Mental Health First Aid Instructor from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

The cost from this training will be going towards non allowable expenses.
