About this Event
With 10.2% of youth diagnosed with a substance use disorder in their lifetime, 1 in 5 teens and young adults living with a mental health condition, and 50% of all mental illnesses beginning by age 14, our young people need us to be able to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health.
Youth Mental Health First Aid consists of 2-hours of self-paced content followed by 4.5 hours of instructor-led training.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge, how to listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to a youth who may be experiencing a mental health challenge, and how to refer a person to appropriate professional support and services.
In virtual training, you will learn:
- Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).
- Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
- How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis.
- How to connect the youth with help.
- Expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying
