To receive a certificate you will need to attend on both dates: 13th and 16th February
What is Mental Health First Aid?Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course, designed to teach people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis. Every MHFA England course is delivered by a quality assured instructor.
Youth MHFA is tailored for people who teach, work, live with and care about young people aged 8 to 18. Many of the skills are transferable to use with adults.
Funded by Brent Council, The Jen Group are delivering separate courses for:
- young people (16+) living in Brent
- community-based professionals working in Brent (sorry, not schools)
Youth MHFA Two Day course
Completing the two day course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider.
Youth Mental Health First Aiders have:
- An in depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing
- Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
- Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress
- Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
- Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support
- Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive
- Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing
The course is delivered in four manageable chunks:
- About mental health
- Depression and anxiety
- Suicide and psychosis
- Self-harm and eating disorders
These will be delivered face-to-face, at locations in Brent, over two full days (9-5pm), or four evenings (5-9pm).
The course focuses on the issues faced by young people today, such as cyber bullying and substance misuse, and teaches how to promote protective factors.
Everyone who completes the course gets a Youth MHFA manual to refer to whenever they need it, and a certificate to say they are a Youth Mental Health First Aider.
These courses are not lectures or classes. They are very interactive, with lots of different activities, quizzes, films and discussions. People often comment on how enjoyable these courses are, they talk a lot and laugh a fair bit too. You won't be asked to share any of your own mental health concerns, but there will be support available should you need it.
Feedback
The course was really enjoyable, engaging and very informative. I love that the instructors were continuously getting us involved weather it was through discussions, group work, roll play or written format. The work books provided which covers so much knowledge and allows us to look back and read in more depth on specific mental health areas, is great and the overall delivery of the course was amazing.
The course was very well delivered. I understand that there is so much more to know and learn about where mental health is concerned and that we are all responsible and can do something to help. Thank you for starting me on my new journey and role.
