This workshop is intended for Indigenous youth between the ages of 12-22.
Join us for a fun afternoon at the Gallery, full of weaving and socializing. Led by Musqueam weaver Rita Kompst, participants will learn to weave their own cedar bracelet. Rita will also discuss the importance of cedar and share teachings related to weaving. Lunch will be provided at the completion of the workshop.

The workshop is free, but registration is required. Please email Amelia Rea at [email protected] to register. Be sure to include your nation/community and age. Limited to 20 spots.
Priority will be given to youth from the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations.
🔴 Artist Bio 🔴
Rita was born and raised in Musqueam, located in what is now known as Vancouver. Both of Rita’s parents were from Musqueam. She started cedar weaving once her father passed away, as per her cultural teachings, and experienced several personal losses in the years following, which pushed her to continue to weave to heal on her healing journey. Her mentor, Todd Devries, a Haida Weaver, encouraged her to begin teaching cedar weaving full-time. Rita is also a natural dyer of wool with mushrooms, plants and lichens. In both of her mediums, Rita focuses on connecting to the land we live, work and play on.
