About this Event

Adolescence is a time of important change and development. It is also the time when mental health problems can first emerge.

During high school years, mental health problems are among the leading causes of falling grades, problems with friends, and relationships, substance use or abuse and they can have lifelong impact.

That’s where Mental Health First Aid training can help.

With a focus on improved mental health literacy and early intervention, Youth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander MHFA is for adults who work, live or care for adolescents such as teachers, school support staff, parents, sports coaches, community group leaders and youth workers.

Learn how to assist Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people who may be developing a mental illness, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

You will be grounded in social and emotional well-being from an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander perspective and explore strengths-based communication tips to engage and get support for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people.

Mental health first aid skills learnt by participants in this course can be applied in any setting. Course content includes case studies, videos and resources.

This is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.

Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in help provided over time.

Delivery method

The Blended Online Course includes two components:

Component 1: A self-paced eLearning component; and

Component 2: An Instructor-led workshop component delivered online using video conferencing technology.

Participants are required to complete both course components of a Blended MHFA Course to be eligible to complete our Accreditation Assessment.
