About this Event
Let’s celebrate our film about the Berkeley Rose Garden and join in a community conversation on the New Deal legacy at this critical moment in history.
Why has the New Deal, and the ideals underlying it, taken such a beating lately – and what can we do about it?
We need to remind people what a functioning government can achieve when it genuinely commits itself to the common good. Luckily, there are literally thousands of examples all around us – parks, buildings, infrastructure, and public art – of the lasting works of the WPA and other programs of the New Deal.
is a 6 minute love-letter to just one of those projects, the Berkeley Rose Garden.

Join us to celebrate the completion of the film. We are thrilled to bring this community-driven short film to this very community-focused theater. You are invited to join the director, producer, cast, crew, and supporters in our local premiere screening, learn about the work of the Living New Deal, and hear plans for getting the film out into the world. We hope to inspire a conversation and solidarity around what’s happening to our shared Commons—our public lands— under the new regime.
About the film:
In the darkest days of the Great Depression, forgotten Americans built a haven of sunlight and flowers in the hills of Berkeley, California. The workers who made the Berkeley Rose Garden were hired by President Roosevelt's WPA, which gave jobs to the unemployed and created public infrastructure that is cherished and relied upon to this day. Weaving imagery from the distant past to the living present, "Your Rose Garden" celebrates this still-thriving community space to the tune of Alexis Harte's joyful song.
