Your Child Was Diagnosed With Autism. Now What?
About this Event
A place to process the diagnosis, understand your options, and make a plan.
Sunday, October 18, 2026 | 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
Taborspace | SE Portland
A new autism diagnosis can bring a lot of feelings—and a lot of questions.
What does this mean for my child? What do we do next? What support is available? What about school? Where do I even start?
Whether your child is a young child, school-aged, or a teenager, you don't have to figure it all out at once.
Join Amy Greenfield, LMFT, and Theresa Jahangir, M.A., Educational Advocate, for a small-group workshop created specifically for parents and caregivers of children and teens who are newly diagnosed with autism.
This is a place to come together, process, learn, and make a plan.
What We'll Cover
Processing the Diagnosis
Amy Greenfield, LMFT
Receiving an autism diagnosis can bring up many different emotions—sometimes all at once. Amy will create space to explore the emotional experience of diagnosis, including uncertainty, grief, relief, fear, hope, and the many feelings that can coexist as you begin to understand your child's diagnosis.
We'll talk about processing your own experience while staying connected to your child and supporting them as they understand themselves.
Building Your Support Roadmap
Theresa Jahangir, M.A., Educational Advocate
Once you have a diagnosis, it can feel like you're suddenly expected to know how to navigate an entirely new system.
Theresa will break down what comes next and help you understand how to begin building your child's support team.
We'll cover:
- Understanding your child's educational rights and options
- Getting started with an IEP or 504 Plan
- Navigating school evaluations and services
- Understanding what to do if your child already has an IEP or 504 Plan
- Exploring community-based services and supports
- Identifying resources for children and teens
- Building a team of people and systems that can support your child
- Knowing what to prioritize now—and what can wait
- Creating a practical first-year roadmap after diagnosis
