Workshop Description:
This four week long fall DJ workshop is designed to provide youth a positive outlet of expression through the art of DJing. Each week we will focus on a specific aspect of DJing from… getting familiar with the equipment, to mixing songs, sampling sounds, scratching records, crowd control, and more. All equipment will be provided for youth participants as well as the amazing space the Museum of Boulder holds for youth participants to experiment and explore with the tools of the DJ craft. Our hands-on workshops include guest presentations from active professional DJs and our workshops always conclude with a showcase in which youth participants will have the opportunity to curate their own event, play their own original sets, and perform for a live audience. Not only does this workshop teach skills in the art of DJing, but also this workshop teaches community organization, teamwork, music theory, sound engineering, performance, and how to make Djing a viable creative career. This workshop is perfect for youth who have an interest in music and a desire to learn how the art of DJing really works.
Workshop Curriculum:
Week One – Equipment and Troubleshooting
A good DJ is an electrician, an engineer, and a producer all in one. For this to happen they must know their equipment well in case any technical difficulties occur. To teach this in this workshop we will have multiple stations set up where youth participants can learn about the different kinds of equipment a DJ commonly uses from turntables, controllers, samplers, speakers, lighting, and sound boards. This first workshop will be an exploration through these different stations and youth participants will learn how to break down, set up, and properly use all of the required equipment.
Week Two – Mixing and Song Selection
So much happens behind the scenes before a DJ goes live. Good DJs must know their music, create their sets, and know how to transition between their songs in a way that keeps the party moving. To teach this in this workshop we will provide youth participants with the basic skills for how DJs mix songs. This includes how to cue, how to match bpms, how to choose appropriate songs, and special transition techniques. In this second workshop youth will put together their own set list in order to prepare for the end of the workshop showcase.
Week Three – Performing and Crowd Control
The art of DJing is not complete without an audience to share your music with. Good DJs must know their audience and must know what it takes to keep them moving to their music. To teach this in this workshop we will provide youth participants with tips that will help them read the audience to know exactly what to play next. We will go over concepts such as MCing, call & response, observation, crowd energy, and group facilitation skills. After this workshop the students will have the tools at their disposal to play for any audience of their choice.
Week Four – Showcase Day
The Museum of Boulder will provide the amazing rooftop space for the concluding showcase. Youth who are interested in performing will be able to schedule a slot to perform. There will be other opportunities for youth to participate who are not interested in performing. These opportunities include, set up, break down, flier creation, MCing, and space decoration. This will be a youth curated event in which the community will be invited to come enjoy the space And dance to the Djs music. This will be an amazing opportunity to perform in front of a real live audience.
