Young Composers Intensive • JULY 16 – 25, 2026

This residency is based upon Felsenfeld's course The Ethical Composer and is for composers aged 16 to 24 years old.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Residency Statement: The Ethical Composer is an unconventionally comprehensive approach to composition that explores social dialogues and mutual understandings between composers and performers—who will be co-mentors and teachers—in the creation of music. The course is built on performer surveys and feedback geared to help composers develop awareness and create actionable steps in building meaningful and long-lasting artistic collaborations.

Participants will exit this residency not only with a completed piece that has been professionally performed and recorded, but with a deeper sense of collaboration and collective empathy.

This year’s focus will be on the writing of the art song and will feature pianist Andrea Christie and Soprano Britt Hewitt. We will discuss everything from text setting to piano writing to balance in this most intimate of musical niches, that of the “art” song.

True to its name, this is an intensive. The daily schedule will include an average of six hours of program work per day.
