About this Event
Dublin City Council Historian in Residence for Dublin Central, Dr. Mary Muldowney is working with Dr. Declan O’Brien on a book about the history of the Dublin Cattle Market. She has been interviewing people who volunteered to share their experience of living beside, dealing with or working in the Cattle Market, until its closure in 1973. Their book will expand on the research carried out by Declan for his 2021 publication in the Maynooth Studies in Local History series The Dublin Cattle Market’s decline, 1955-73 and by Mary for her series of talks on Disappearing Workplaces in Dublin, which she delivered in several city libraries and which formed the basis of her chapter in Volume 2 of History on Your Doorstep in 2019. The Cattle Market played an important role in the development of the area in which it was situated – the North Circular Road and Prussia Street, in what is now Dublin 7. Extracts from Mary’s interviews with people who have responded to her call for volunteers to share their memories of the Market will be the basis of this presentation, hosted by the Central Library. Representing different facets of the life of the Market, the contributors come from various parts of the city and country and shed a fascinating light on what was once such an important workplace.
