On February 5th, 2024, Stacey McDonell was diagnosed with breast cancer. Stacey’s cancer is triple positive, meaning it’s fed by her estrogen and progesterone hormones, as well as the HER2 protein. The grade is 3, meaning this cancer is aggressive and fast moving. Stacey’s treatment plan is clear right now, but long. She’ll be undergoing chemo from this week through June, a double mastectomy, approximately 30 rounds of radiation, breast reconstruction, immunotherapy through her port for 1 year, and oral medication for 5 years.
Christopher and Stacey McDonell are life long residents of the Manitowoc community. Stacey is a local entrepreneur and Chris is a concrete finisher and tester for Vinton Construction. They have 4 children, ages 21, 18, 18, and 12.
While Chris and Stacey are blessed to have excellent medical insurance, neither Chris nor Stacey have the benefit of any paid time off from work. There will be days and weeks Stacey will need to be off work following treatment and surgeries, and Chris will need to care of her. In addition, the costs of treatment items, medical equipment, and services not covered by insurance are growing by the day.
Accepting support in this way is not something that comes naturally or easily to Chris or Stacey, but it’s what will ease their stress in the days, months, and year ahead.
