YMO x PRS: The YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA Mixtape — An Original Video Voyage!
About this Event
Co-presented by Vintage Synthesizer Museum!
As part of 7th House's August series SEE•SOUND, join us for our very special YMO x PRS night at The Philosophical Research Society, as we present the world premiere of THE YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA MIXTAPE — a feature-length big screen celebration of electronic music pioneers and Japanese technopop architects YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA!
Lovingly assembled from a dizzying array of materials spanning the group's history, this audiovisual journey tells YMO's story through classic and rare live performances, music videos, interviews, television and film appearances, commercials, solo and side projects, and all manner of strange and wonderful ephemera — tracing the coming together of Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Yukihiro Takahashi, three extraordinary musical minds who produced some of the most exhilarating and forward-thinking music of their era and beyond, as well as the artists in their orbit, including close collaborator and key live band member Akiko Yano, whose musical presence became an integral part of the YMO story.
Formed in Tokyo in 1978, Yellow Magic Orchestra seized upon rapidly evolving electronic technology to open up new possibilities for popular music. Synthesizers, sequencers, drum machines, samplers, and computers met pop melody, funk, disco, exotica, and irreverent humor to create a sound—and a world—entirely their own.
The reverberations were enormous. YMO's music would prove foundational to synth-pop, electro, hip-hop, techno, house, video game music, and countless strains of electronic music that followed, while Hosono, Sakamoto, and Takahashi each pursued remarkably diverse creative lives far beyond the group itself. Nearly half a century later, YMO's music still feels startlingly alive: playful and sophisticated, futuristic and human.
Masterfully and meticulously crafted especially for 7th House, THE YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA MIXTAPE is a lovingly assembled video voyage through the dazzlingly inventive world of one of modern music's most singular and influential groups.
