Patch York | York, EN
About this Event
This creative workshop draws on ongoing research into fatness and the archive, which explores how histories of fat lives, bodies and fat activism are produced, obscured and reimagined through curation. Using examples of images of fat people and archive descriptions sourced from online catalogues, we will explore patterns of representation and reflect upon the power of language in shaping historical meaning and social norms. We will then creatively re-imagine how images are described by creating liberatory alternative descriptions, informed by lived experience and affective connections with the past.
Please note: There will be some discussion of ongoing discrimination and historical derogatory presentation of fat and disabled people. Historical images of fat people also involve nudity. Therefore, we recommend attendees be 16+.
Patch is fully wheelchair accessible. There are gender neutral, and accessible toilets and shower. There is step-free access from Patch to the street.
