The society welcomes back Alistair Hodgson who spent many years in Salisbury Hall's curatorial office at the de Havilland Museum, London Colney, Hertfordshire. Alistair’s presentations are always very well researched and full of fascinating detail so come along or join his talk online to hear about Britain's and the world's first jet airliner, its triumphs and tragedies.
The Comet airliner had a distinguished career as a RAF strategic transport with Transport Command/Air Support Command at Lyneham, Wiltshire and with the RCAF. RAF Comets could regularly be seen at Washington Dulles, El Adem, Malta, Nicosia, Muharraq, Gan, Singapore, Darwin and Hong Kong.
The RAF operated 10 Comet C2 from 1956 and three reconfigured R2 ELINT varients in the electronic survelliance reconnaissance role. Five Comet C4 transports flew in RAF service from 1962-75. In 1968 the RAF developed the Comet 4 into the Nimrod ASW hunter.
RAE Comet 2 XN453 flew on navigation trials work and latterly A+AEE Boscombe Down employed Comet 4 'Canopus' for experimental testing, while the only Comet 3 built was assigned to RAE Bedford's Blind Landing Experimental Unit. A heavily modified Comet 4 was used by British Aerospace for (Nimrod) AEW radar trials.
This talk will be held at FAAM and also streamed live Online via zoom for those living away from Somerset. Non-members are welcome to attend.
Tickets will become available in October.
