Ye at the Dome: Can You Separate the Art from the Artist?
About this Event
Eat. Drink. Think. ...then Talk Smart to Me
This week's question: Ye performs at the Superdome in roughly two weeks. Can you separate the art from the artist?
Every Tuesday, NOLA Art Bar puts one question on the table and gets out of the way. Pick a side before you arrive. Bring it with you.
Your $5 ticket comes back to you as $5 off your first order at the bar. It exists so we know who's coming -- nothing more.
The question:
On August 28, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West performs at the Superdome -- his first New Orleans show in thirteen years. Some of us already have tickets. Some of us wouldn't take one for free. Most of us are somewhere in between and haven't said so out loud.
The record is what it is: years of antisemitic and pro-Nazi statements, followed by a public reversal and, in January, a full-page open letter apologizing to the people he hurt.
So what do we do with the catalog? Does an apology change the math, or only change the conversation? Is there a line where the art stops being separable at all -- and where's yours?
He isn't the first artist to force this question and won't be the last. He's just the one coming to town.
No right answer is being handed out at the door.
How the night works:
6:00 -- we open the question. Not a lecture, not a panel, no microphone. Someone frames it in about ninety seconds, and then it belongs to the room.
8:00 -- the conversation ends and the bar stays open until 10. Most of the best talking happens after the official part is over.
Come alone or bring people. There's no networking agenda, and nobody is going to make you introduce yourself to the group.
What's here:
Wine, cocktails, mocktails, coffee, tea, and small bites. Plush seats inside surrounded by books and art, plus the courtyard when the weather cooperates.
We're the bar side of Baldwin & Co. The store is named for a writer who spent his life on exactly this question: what we owe the work of people who have failed us, and what we owe each other while we figure it out. This is the room where the rest of us take a swing at it.
