YCT Lunchtime Talk: 'Severus Hill - A History in 10 & 1/2 Mysteries'
Schedule
Tue Jan 16 2024 at 01:00 pm to 02:00 pm
Location
Friargate Quaker Meeting House | York, EN
About this Event
Come join us for an informal talk by the Trust's own Civic Society Manager, Duncan Marks. The talk explores the largely unknown history of York's largest landmark - Severus Hill - or rather hills! - in the Acomb / Holgate Area, where today a massive water tower stands proud.
Severus Hill is currently up for sale, and while ward Councillors have negotiated with Yorkshire Water to delay the sale, an understanding of the history of the site better informs what possibilities it might be used for.
And what a history! Framed around 10 & 1/2 mysteries associated with the site, including whether it is man-made, the talk takes in Roman Emperors, Viking huntsmen, Roundheads and Cavaliers, mid-C18 etchings, Napoleon, York's earliest tourists, water provision and leaky pipes, and WW2 bomb craters and unexploded bombs!
Join us on Tuesday 16th January, 1-2pm.
This event is free for YCT members and £5 for non-members.
PLEASE NOTE the new venue at the Friargate Centre, so as to accommodate the level of demand.
