Xmas in Skaville #22

Come celebrate the 22nd annual Xmas in Skaville with performances by Balkan Shmalkan, Brehdren, Brasser, dThe Wavebirds, and Bobbi-Jo Moore & The Elixxxirs.

The Grinch & Jack Skellington will also be on hand to fight over who will serve as the official master of ceremonies.

Balkan Shmalkan is East Vancouver's sweet dance party orchestra; global music with local attitude. Their funky brass dance beats are rooted in the living aural traditions of the Roma and Klezmorim of Eastern Europe and blended with a mixture of pop, funk, and jazz. Members of the group sing in 6 languages including Serbian, Romani, and Italian.

The group is a colourful, vibrant, and celebrative group of brass, drums, and vocals best enjoyed up close and personal. They are exceptionally versatile and mobile, playing on and off stage with nothing more than the power of their lungs and horns. Balkan Shmalkan can bring the party to any setting, because Balkan Shmalkan is a party.

Formed in East Vancouver in 2010, Brehdren is an upbeat, theatrical, 11-piece band with varied influences and a shared love of ska and reggae. Together, the band has recorded four studio albums, one live album, and performed hundreds of shows, including opening the 25th Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival, selling out the Wise Hall during its annual Xmas in Skaville event, and rocking the Rickshaw with New York ska heroes, The Slackers.

Motivated to pack the dancefloor, Brehdren has drawn praise for a fun and irreverent style brought to life in both their music and stage presence. From extended jams to two-minute freak outs, Brehdren is a band you have to see live to understand.

Brehdren will occasionally perform under the moniker “The Space Detectives” for shows that may have a different number of members and/or different instrumentation. More recently, the band has been playing quarterly acoustic shows as The Space Detectives at the Princeton Pub in East Van, with varying guest openers.

Brasser is a bi-gender fronted ska punk from Vancouver, BC! Big punk sound with two wailing saxes, sultry trumpet, and catchy vox. Dancing, moshing, headbanging. We want it all!
It doesn't matter if you like ska or not, our sound will make you move. Brasser is an independent band that builds its own reputation of destruction.
