As part of the seasonal observance of Ce Tochtli (One Rabbit) on the Tonalpohualli (Mexica Calendar), Kalpulli Ayolopaktzin will be collaborating with Danza Azteca Macuilxochitl and the Xochipilli Collective to welcome and celebrate a Spring Rites of Passage through a Corn Planting and Water Blessing ceremony. As an intertribal and traditional Mexica-Chichimeca and Danza Azteca community, this gathering honors the relationships we hold as kin in relation to land, seeds, and water. The Rites of Passage offered through this ceremony are for the community and are rooted in creating belonging, cultural pride, self-love, and a sense of purpose. These rites mark meaningful thresholds, such as coming of age, receiving a Mexica name, or stepping into new phases of life, and support participants through a process of transformation, shifting from one stage of life into another with intention and care. In reclaiming these rituals, we are also reclaiming our culture, spirituality, and relationship to ourselves and one another.
Together, we will mark the first planting of a milpa on the ceremonial grounds of the Xochipilli Collective, welcoming a new seasonal cycle of growth, responsibility, and renewal. Conducting rites of passage alongside the planting of corn and the blessing of water reminds us that life transitions are interconnected, and that we move through cycles of becoming together.
As part of this transition, Kalpulli Ayolopaktzin will also be honoring with much gratitude the heart and rostros of some important members in our tribal family. As an intergenerational community, we walk in support of our children, our youth, our Comadres/Compadres, and our Elders by offering and receiving priceless gifts, which are our songs, our danzas, our stories, our food, earth’s medicine, our sacred life ways, and our collective prayer. The Xochipilli Collective will also unveil Milpa Móvil, their new RV artist residency.
During the ceremony, community members are invited to participate in the planting of corn by placing seeds into the soil to help them establish their first milpa. For the Water Blessing, participants are invited to bring water from their own communities to unite prayers for the healing, protection, and care of all waters.
