About this Event
For our first Stereo Sessions of 2025, presented by Mempho Presents, join us for an immersive listening experience of Phineas Newborn Jr.’s 1957 album, "Phineas’ Rainbow", at the Memphis Listening Lab on Wednesday, April 16th.
Phineas’ Rainbow (1957) is a dazzling display of Phineas Newborn, Jr.’s virtuosic piano technique, blending bebop agility, classical precision, and deep blues feeling. Featuring his brother Calvin Newborn on guitar and fellow Memphian George Joyner (Jamil Nasser) on bass the album moves effortlessly between up-tempo swing, intricate improvisation, and delicate balladry. It’s a perfect introduction to one of jazz’s most technically gifted yet soulful pianists.
Crosstown Brewing Co. beer is available at the event for WYXR members. Become a member today at wyrxr.org/donate.
Thank you to our sponsors for Phineas Newborn Jr.’s “Phineas’ Rainbow": Mempho Presents, Memphis Listening Lab, VIA Productions, Crosstown Brewing Co., Independent Bank, Shangri-La Records, and Duncan Williams Asset Management.
