About this Event
An afternoon of talks on the amazing science that has been carried out in Wytham Woods and to celebrate a new book from Oxford University Press: Wytham Woods: How a Landscape Works - the definitive scientific overview of the Woods.
As the University's research woodland, the Woods have been studied intensively by generations of scientists, but they continue to yield up new secrets. Written by an expert group including Nigel Fisher (OGE Conservator) and edited by veteran Woods researcher Dr Keith Kirby, the new publication focuses on the last decade and a half of discoveries.
Celebrate the publication with an afternoon of talks from scientists about their work in Wytham Woods. From the global to microbial: Professor Yadvinder Malhi will tell how his study of the carbon dynamics in the Woods contributes to a world-wide assessments of the role of forests in climate change; while Professor Sarah Knowles will explore the microbiome in mice affects their lifestyle. Professor Ben Sheldon will describe the nearly 80 years of studies of birds in the Woods; and Lucy Crittendon will review the role of Hill End Camp on the Wytham Estate in promoting environmental education over the past century! Finally Dr Denise Pallet from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology will talk about their studies of long-term change at Wytham.
During the mid-afternoon coffee break there will be a chance to look at copies of the book and talk to some of the speakers.
The event takes place in the main lecture theatre in the Museum of Natural History.
