Wyrd War commemorates the 50th anniversary of exploitation champion Charles B. Pierce’s classic tale of terror THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN (1976)!Over the course of ten terrifying weeks in 1946, an unknown assailant known in the media as The Phantom Killer hunted the backroads and farmhouses of quaint Texarkana, murdering five and wounding eight in a still unsolved killing spree known as The Texarkana Moonlight Murders. Thirty years later, regional independent filmmaker Charles B. Pierce (THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK) returned to Texarkana to shoot this dramatization of the crimes, and the desperate attempt to catch the killer, that would earn its place in the annals of low budget southern fried cinema despite the groans of film critics everywhere.
Western screen legends Andrew Prine and a decidedly very hungover Academy Award winning (not for this) Ben Johnson star as local Deputy Norman Ramsey and Texas Ranger Captain J.D. Morales, who race against time toward a final act that was clearly not yet written when on-location shooting began. Incongruently comedic and at times startlingly violent and genuinely creepy, the film Gene Siskel called “dumb” and Los Angeles Times critic Kevin Thomas called "this week's trash picture” is, in fact, mandatory viewing for fans of under appreciated 1970s grindhouse horror treasures.
