Wyrd War presents the ultimate holiday exploitation film MOTHER’S DAY (1980) with legendary Troma director Charles Kaufman in attendance…on Mother’s Day!Possibly the most shocking and unrelentingly meanspirited rape-revenge film from the golden age of extremely graphic horror cinema, Charles Kaufman’s controversial low budget black comedy MOTHER’S DAY was widely protested domestically and outright banned in the United Kingdom by the British Board of Film Classification until 2015. You have been warned.
Three former college roommates embark on their annual reunion camping trip, which takes them to the Deep Barons Wilderness Area of rural New Jersey, where they are abducted, bound and tortured by a deranged septuagenarian mother and her two sadistic backwoods sons. The trio of friends attempt to survive, escape and turn the tables on their tormentors, who are being stalked by a feral inbred variation of the Jersey Devil cryptid. Infrequently referenced in critical examinations of the “final girl” trope, MOTHER’S DAY is in retrospect a deceptively smart satirical flaying of American consumerism pop culture, and the baser misogynistic impulses that lurk beneath the surface of civility, that is ultimately more compelling and entertaining than a film made for $116,000 has any right to be.
Director Charles Kaufman will Join Wyrd War’s Dennis Dread on stage for a moderated discussion about the making of his maligned cult classic and its lasting impact. Due to the extreme graphic violence of this film, no one 17 or younger will be permitted.
