Join Wyrd War in the dystopian future for a rare big screen presentation of Richard Stanley’s cult British science-fiction genre smashup HARDWARE (1990) for one night only on the Summer Solstice!
A mysterious nomadic scavenger, played by Carl McCoy of goth rock band Fields of the Nephilim, discovers the remains of a robot in the irradiated sands of a post-nuclear war wasteland and proceeds to a border town slum to sell the scraps to a merchant. Unbeknownst to the junk dealer and his unscrupulous pals, these are parts of an experimental self-repairing combat robot named M.A.R.K. 13 that was designed to exterminate humans as part of a government depopulation plan. Soon Iggy Pop of The Stooges and Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead make cameo appearances as a radio disc jockey and cab driver respectively, and low-budget hell breaks loose as expected. A wry commentary on the dangers of artificial intelligence and fascism, HARDWARE is eerily more relevant in 2024 than it was when it became an unexpected hit and launched Richard Stanley's career 34 years ago. “No flesh shall be spared.”
This screening celebrates the release of Portland deathrock band DEATHCHARGE’s first new album in more than a decade. Wyrd War has prepared a special purple vinyl variant (limited to 250 copies) that will be available directly from the band in the lobby before and after the film.
