About this Event
Wunderbar Live Art Social #2: Toi Guy and Jesse Salaman at Lubber Kitchen
There are lots of people working in live art in Newcastle and the northeast, though we might usually think of ourselves as visual artists, musicians, choreographers, theatremakers and so on. Wunderbar would like to contribute towards building a community of practice around experimental performance, which starts with us getting to know each other.
After a wonderful social at D6 hosted by Patrick Ziza, we'll meet at Lubber Kitchen to hear about the work of and by hosted by Toi Guy and Jesse Salaman, who work together and maintain separate practices. There'll be a bit of something organised, and plenty of time just to meet each other and hang out!
Please book. There's no need to pay, but if you would like to contribute it will help more things like this happen. BYOB!
In order to prioritise getting to know each other, the event is capped at twelve people. Please get in touch if you don't manage to get a ticket; we'll run a waitlist.

Huge thanks to Lubber Kitchen for hosting the social. Thanks to Curious Arts for providing seed funding. Thanks to Mat Tye for design and to Joe Copley for the image.

Jesse Salaman is a queer movement artist based in Newcastle upon Tyne who creates durational improvisations involving live soundmaking and experimental dance performances that explore gaze, liveness and agency. Toi Guy is a queer Geordie-Colombian artist who works with movement, video and fibres to create performances, screen-dance and wearable items. Together they have been developing a joint practice exploring queerness through movement and sound, creating fantasy landscapes through costume, choreography and live electronic sound scores.
Their performance for Middlesbrough Art Week in 2025 was described like this:
Jesse Salaman & Toi Guy bringing sound play from the back room in the servants quarters, the inverts on the back seat; chime-chime, chin-chin and cheers to hard on hard romantic friendship, navigating eachother and falling into an activity not recognised.
