Writing Your Life Stories with Beth Yahp: A series of workshops for fiction and memoir writers
Two full day creative writing workshops on Sat 11 and Sun 12 February 2023 will focus on inspiring the life writer in you to begin writing your or another’s life stories. These workshops offer inspiration, creative writing skills and a safe space to create new writing or refine an existing story, using techniques such as working with personal objects, guided visualisation and discussion. Beth will provide samples of writing texts and the attentive teaching that she is known for as an experienced and award-winning teacher of creative writing. All workshops are stand-alone except for Workshop 4 although you are encouraged to attend all workshops for the full benefit of this intensive creative life writing course.
You need to have attended at least one of the other workshops (Workshop 1–3) in order to attend Workshop 4, as participants will be creating and developing your writing towards workshopping in Workshop 4.
Aim of the workshops:
1. To create a safe space where participants can explore writing your life stories (your own or another’s, real or imagined) through writing exercises, discussion and writing samples. Participants are encouraged to bring in and work with a personal object or may explore objects within Malaysia Design Archive.
2. To learn some basics of writing craft, for example, how to begin your writing practice, how to pay attention to the world, how to access your memories, how to write real/convincing people and places etc.
3. Workshop 4 will focus on the craft of workshopping: how to read/listen attentively to each other’s work, give useful feedback, refine your writing.
4. Explore the usefulness of the life writing workshop for you to write your life stories and perhaps begin a larger writing project: what works, what could be improved.
5. For those who are keen, there is the possibility of continuing to work with Beth (online) in a further series of workshops (Workshopping Your Writing) every 3-4 weeks for 5 sessions in order to further create and develop a piece of your writing towards publication in an MDA online anthology or a print chapbook over the following 6 months. The workshops will run online on either Saturday or Sunday.
