About this Event

Huyton-born writer and broadcaster Tony Schumacher is author of award-winning TV drama The Responder. This critically acclaimed drama, inspired by Schumacher’s ten-year career as an officer in Merseyside Police, holds a mirror up to the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing – sometimes darkly funny, sometimes painfully tragic, and always challenging. Now in its second series on BBC One, The Responder follows PC Chris Carson (Martin Freeman), a crisis-stricken, morally compromised, unconventional urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool. Tony will discuss his breakthrough into the writing world through his three novels, including The Darkest Hour, an alternate history work set in 1940s era UK after a hypothetical Nazi victory in World War Two. Reflecting on his career, he’ll also share his thoughts on taking The Responder from page to screen, while filming the drama in familiar locations across his home city.
