Writing and selling fiction and features with freelance writer and author Dr Rachel Knightley
About this Event

Writing Stories, Selling Stories shares how to generate and sell your fiction and feature ideas to magazines, anthologies, newspapers and other in-print and online markets. Explore how we reliably create and develop material (10 June) and how we ensure it fits the places and people we send it out to (17 June). Over two Saturday afternoons in the gorgeous surroundings of Olympic Studios, build healthy freelance habits and target the markets that are the right home for your writing.

Week 1: Writing Fiction and Features

No matter how much (or little) writing experience we have, every interest and every experience is potential material not just for our fiction but for potential magazine, newspaper and online features. Today's mix of creative and practical techniques take you to the heart of who you are as a writer: how to uncover and utilise the treasure trove of relevant experience it's so easy to overlook in ourselves when we start out as freelance writers.

Week 2: Selling Fiction and Features

You've got your idea, you know where you want to see it published: how do you secure the result you want? Today is about how to present yourself and your ideas so you stand out when you apply to the in-print and online platforms you want your writing to be part of. View real-life pitches, acceptance and rejection letters, submission guidelines and editorial advice, providing new angles as you step further into your freelance writing career.

Dr Rachel Knightley is a fiction and non-fiction writer (Black Shuck Books, Hodder Education, Swan River Press). In addition to her freelance writing (Writers' Forum, Woman's Weekly, Fangoria, Starburst Magazine and Youtube channel) she lectures in creative writing at Roehampton University and writes and presents Bly-ray extras (Severin Films, Second Sight Films, Indicator Films). Rachel is also a qualified business and personal coach (Barefoot Coaching, Chester University) and has a PGCert in Teaching Creative Writing (Cambridge University). www.rachelknightley.com
