Free Creative Water Day workshop at Saddlescombe Farm Learning Barn led by writer, mentor and facilitator Jackie Mendoza
About this Event

Modern-day technology, algorithms and social media feed us the illusion of connection, but in reality, many of us feel more disconnected than ever before. We may even have lost touch with the very essence of what it is we long to connect to.

Using guided journeys and contemplations, as well as the imagery of water as the River of Life that flows through us, this workshop will help you reconnect with yourself, what’s important to you and your creativity.

Held in the nourishing environment of Saddlescombe Farm Learning Barn, there will be plenty of time to pause and connect to the elements and rhythms of nature to ask: What lies at the heart of my being that’s yearning to be expressed?

Come with a curious mind and feel into what unfolds.

Accessibility

Light walking is optional on gravel and hillside paths. The terrain can be uneven in places, but the producer will stay at the Learning Barn for those who choose not to walk.

Please let us know if you have any access needs we need to be aware of or if you need more information by emailing [email protected] or [email protected].

See our Access Policy for more info about how we can support.

Venue & How to get there

The Learning Barn at Saddlescombe Farm has disabled access and a disabled toilet. Cars can pull up right outside the front door. There is loose gravel on a flat surface around the perimeter of the Learning Barn, which is accessible by wheelchair.

Transport:

  • We are organising lifts from Brighton Station for those who need it. You can book this when selecting your tickets.
  • You can get there by car. Paid parking on site.
  • By bus: The 77 bus service travels up to Devil's Dyke from Brighton city centre seven days a week in the summer, passing the pier and the train station. From the bus stop it is a gentle 20 minute walk to Saddlescombe along the South Downs Way.
The number 17 bus from Brighton to Horsham will drop you at Poynings crossroad/ Rushfield roundabout, and it is approximately a mile’s walk from there.
  • By train: Brighton train station and Hassocks train station are both 5 miles away from the venue. A train ticket gets you a 2-4-1 offer on adult single and return tickets for the 77 bus to Devil's Dyke, or 1/3 off the standard single adult price.

About the artist

Jackie is a writer, mentor and facilitator. She loves creating and holding safe spaces for writers and creatives where each individual is free to show up as their authentic selves to be seen, heard and honoured within the group. Jackie trained as a Transpersonal Counsellor and is a Master Practitioner of NLP as well as a shamanic practitioner. These days much of her facilitation work focuses on somatic awareness and embodied practices that promote greater coherence between mind and heart.
Where writing is concerned, Jackie’s poetry has been published in Covert 5 Magazine as well as in the Zine, Re-Membering South Asian Feminist Poetics. Her first novel in progress was shortlisted for Peters Fraser & Dunlop’s Queer Fiction Prize in 2023. She is currently editing her second novel.
Jackie is a member of the Community Advisory Panel for Downs to the Sea and is a trustee for Little Green Pig, a local charity that helps young writers flourish.

About the Downs to the Sea Partnership

Downs to the Sea brings together a partnership comprising the South Downs National Park Trust, South Downs National Park Authority, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Western Sussex Rivers Trust (formerly known as Arun and Rother Rivers Trust), Brighton and Hove City Council, and Writing Our Legacy.

The partnership focuses on the two following strands:

  • Water in the landscape, focused on restoring and improving vital wetlands, ponds and rivers, and increasing the landscape’s resilience to climate change and other threats;
  • Water in people’s lives, focused on connecting people to natural heritage and the water in their lives, to benefit their health and wellbeing, to develop skills and knowledge, and to help protect precious freshwater resources that are vital to our communities.

Refunds

All ticket purchases are non-refundable. As a small grassroots organisation, ticket income directly supports the delivery of our events and programmes. Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer refunds for non-attendance or changes in personal circumstances, as doing so would put our work at risk. Thank you for understanding and for supporting our mission.
