Join literary scholars and historians Sonja Mejcher-Atassi, Marilyn Booth and Peter Hill as they discuss their recent books which use biography to investigate the modern history of the Middle East.
Sonja Mejcher-Atassi's An Impossible Friendship tells the story of a remarkable group of Muslim, Jewish and Christian friends in Jerusalem, before and after the creation of Israel in 1948.
Marilyn Booth's The Career and Communities of Zaynab Fawwaz examines the literary career of a pioneering Arab feminist and debates around gender in 1890s Egypt.
Peter Hill's Prophet of Reason uses the life of Syrian polymath Mikha'il Mishaqa to investigate the changing role of religion and science in the nineteenth-century Middle East.
