The Importance of Indigenous Children's Books
About this Event

With Leslie Gentile, Ren Louie, and Karen Whetung

When it comes to our children’s understanding of the world, there are key factors that shape their knowledge, like the people who teach them, their interactions with others, and the books they read. Join us as we delve into the world of children’s literacy.

Learn about what it’s like to write for our next generations to support their language development, emotional growth, imagination, and cultural awareness in a way that will keep not only children and youths engaged, but parents as well. This panel will also showcase the importance of children’s books, in not only developing literacy, but also passing on culture. Our panel guests will discuss what it’s like to write for children from an Indigenous perspective, and why they chose this avenue of writing.

Moderated by Monique Gray Smith
