Writing for Performance
Creating dialogue and action for a live performance puts the writer in a rather different position from the novelist or poet: in the theatre, the storytelling happens in the present tense as the play unfolds before each audience; the writer is just one of a group of creatives who will contribute to the final production; and the storytelling can only come through character dialogue and actions (assuming that long stretches of exposition are avoided). Playwrights are open to and intrigued by the way their work comes across when performed by other people, and hearing readings of drafts can be hugely beneficial to the process. In this workshop, we will write some short scenes to be read by each other, and reflect on the nature of effective dramatic dialogue.
