Writing Crime Fiction with Emma Styles, Bridget Walsh and Elspeth Latimer
About this Event
Join us for an unmissable panel on Writing Crime Fiction
Celebrating National Crime Reading Month. We’re thrilled to team up with three brilliant, award-winning authors — Emma Styles, Bridget Walsh, and Elspeth Latimer — for a fascinating discussion on the craft, thrills, and challenges of writing crime fiction.
Emma Styles
Emma writes fierce Australian crime thrillers about young women taking on the patriarchy. Her debut, No Country for Girls, won the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize and the Little, Brown UEA Crime Fiction Award. It was a New Blood selection at Theakston’s Harrogate and shortlisted for the CWA New Blood Dagger, Davitt Award, and Ned Kelly Award.
Her second standalone thriller, The Shark, is out now. A former country vet who grew up near the beach in Western Australia, Emma has also flown small planes, ridden motorcycles, and is a passionate wild swimmer — though perhaps not quite wary enough of great white sharks.
Bridget Walsh
Born in London to Irish parents, Bridget taught English for 23 years before following her passion for writing. Her debut novel, The Tumbling Girl (the first in the Minnie Ward and Albert Easterbrook series), won the 2024 HWA Debut Crown Award and the UEA Little, Brown Award for Crime Fiction, and was shortlisted for the CWA New Blood Dagger.
Set in the vibrant, gritty world of Victorian London’s music halls, the series continues with The Innocents (2024) and the upcoming third instalment, The Spirit Guide, publishing in April 2026 with Pushkin Press. Bridget lives in Norwich with her husband and two dogs.
Elspeth Latimer
Elspeth studied Architecture at Cambridge, spent a year in Italy after winning the Rome Prize, and later completed an MA in Prose Fiction and a PhD on crime series at UEA. A part-time creative writing tutor, she draws inspiration from the subtle beauty and hidden darkness of the Brecks in East Anglia, where she has lived for twenty years. Her debut crime novel, The Lost Detective, is a compelling story of M**der, a missing baby, and the long shadow of loss.
