Writing a Greener Future – A Creative Workshop for Young Writers (16+)
About this Event
What do you think about the global future? Do you have chirpy optimism or climate anxiety and hopelessness? Green fields or visions of AI-robot-filled dystopian landscapes? In this session, we’ll explore facts and feelings about different possible futures the world faces. We’ll tackle misinformation and climate myths, and explore examples of tangible positive solutions that already exist, alongside our own ideas for creating a better world.
Sparking creative responses through practical writing exercises, we’ll explore thrutopian futures – a genre which is neither dystopia nor utopia, but instead imagines ways through from where we are today to something better. We’ll write letters from the future to our present-day selves, freeing our imaginations to dream big and visualise the new worlds we want to see. The intention is for participants to leave feeling hopeful, inspired and empowered.
Laura Baggaley is the author of two eco-themed dystopian novels for teenagers published by Habitat Press: Dirt (winner of Best Book for Teenagers in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards & shortlisted for the Rubery Book Award) and Nourish (longlisted for the Yeovil Literary Prize). She teaches creative writing, literature and drama at City Lit adult education college.
This event is part of the Green Libraries Hub project, a national programme led by CILIP and funded by the National Lottery, exploring the libraries' role in supporting communities to take climate action.
