Join us for an in-person creative writing session for writers of all levels to find inspiration, momentum, and community!
About this Event

This Wednesday evening session will be hosted by The Inner Loop co-founder and dog scientist, Courtney Sexton, who will offer the inspirational framework for the event.

Session includes:

✨ A 10-minute creative prompt or reading

✍️ 90 minutes of dedicated writing time

🤝 20 minutes of optional sharing & reflection

Whether you're drafting a novel, journaling for clarity, or just trying to make time to write, this space is for you.

More about this session: This month I'm personally celebrating a milestone birthday, and let me tell you I'm grateful to be there. So, in a slight detour from my usual content (though likely we'll still be incorporating animals and nature, somehow), this week we're going to focus on writing about/around/because of big changes and gratitude!

More about Courtney: Dr. Courtney Sexton earned her MFA in nonfiction from Sarah Lawrence College and her PhD from The George Washington University. She is an artist, dog scientist, and the Co-founder/Board Chair of DC-based nonprofit literary arts organization, The Inner Loop. In addition to her leadership role at The Inner Loop, Courtney is a professor in the Medical Humanities at Georgetown University and a postdoctoral fellow at Virginia Tech, where her research explores human-animal relationships and One Health. She is an accomplished writer and curator with more than 15 years of experience in advocacy, outreach, and community building. Courtney works with a diverse cadre of humans, animals, institutions, agencies, and organizations, and has been published widely in both academic journals and outlets such as Science, Smithsonian, The Washington Post, Slate, District Fray, The Bark , Garden & Gun, Juxtaprose, SAGE, and The Fourth River. She is a Virginia Tech Research & Innovation Scholar (2024), Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute Fellow (2022), AAAS Mass Media Fellow (2020), and DCCAH Arts & Humanities Fellow (2018; 2022; 2025).

Write Now! sessions with Courtney will primarily draw inspiration from elements in the environment, broadly interpreted, and focus on diverse umwelts. While one session may have you contemplating in the inner mind of a whale, another may prompt you to listen in on your immediate surroundings for cues. Of course, you can also just write about whatever you damned-well please. Or stare. Staring is sometimes good, too. Music might be playing, snacks will definitely be snacking, and sharing will be encouraged, but never forced.

Write Now: Generative Creative Writing Sessions are held every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning for writers of all genres and levels. Drop in for a boost of inspiration, or come every week to build a consistent writing practice.
